Test Score Calculator
Calculate your test score percentage, letter grade, and how many more questions you needed to reach the next grade level.
Quick and clean. I built this after a student asked me how many questions they needed to get right to pass. The "questions needed for next grade" calculation is the one teachers and students both find most useful.
Standard letter grade thresholds: A 90-100%, B 80-89%, C 70-79%, D 60-69%, F below 60%. Some instructors use 93/83/73/63 as the cutoffs instead. Check your specific course syllabus.
How weighted point tests work
Some tests assign different point values to different questions. A 50-question test where each question is worth 2 points produces a 100-point total. This calculator handles any points-per-question value, so you can use it for tests with non-standard scoring. The percentage and letter grade are based on earned points divided by total possible points.
Extra credit
Extra credit points can push the score above 100%, which is why some instructors cap extra credit or apply it differently. This calculator adds extra credit directly to earned points. If your instructor caps scores at 100%, use the base score without extra credit for the percentage calculation.
Frequently asked questions
What is a passing score?
Passing thresholds vary by context. Most K-12 schools use 60% (D) as the minimum passing grade. Many colleges require a C (70%) or better to satisfy a requirement. Professional certifications often require 70-80%. Medical and legal licensing exams typically require 75% or higher. Always check the specific requirement for your course or program.
How do I calculate a weighted test score?
If different sections carry different weights, calculate the score for each section as a percentage, multiply by the section weight, and sum the results. For example: Section A (50 pts possible, scored 42) = 84%, Section B (50 pts, scored 35) = 70%. If both sections are weighted equally, average them: (84+70)/2 = 77%.
